Central line running following emergency repairs

"This was a complicated problem that required specialist equipment and our engineers have worked to resolve the issue as quickly as possible"

On Monday, a fault was found in complex equipment at a London Underground (LU) Substation, which provides the electricity supply to the track. Despite every effort being made to repair the unit, which weighs several tonnes, it had to be completely replaced, with LU engineers working around the clock to get services back to normal as soon as possible.

Peter McNaught, LU's Operations Director for the Central line, said:

'I apologise for the disruption that Central line customers experienced due to this fault. This was a complicated problem that required specialist equipment and our engineers have worked to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We've now got a full service running on the line, and I thank customers for their patience over the last few days.'

Notes to Editors:

  • There are two transformers at the electrical substation and both are needed to run a full service on the Central line. With only one transformer working, LU could only operate a reduced service from Monday afternoon until Wednesday evening.
  • Full power returned to the line at 17.30 on Wednesday, with services starting to return to normal through the evening.
