National Rail pay as you go fares, caps and Travelcards beyond Zone 9

How to pay for travel on National Rail

You can use pay as you go with contactless and Oyster on some National Rail services outside London.

Some National Rail services only accept contactless payment. Before you travel, check which National Rail stations accept contactless pay as you go.

That information, including the pay as you go with contactless map, is on the National Rail website.

You can also use paper (single, returns and season) tickets on National Rail journeys.

You can add a Travelcard season ticket to your Oyster card for travel to and from Broxbourne, Rye House, St Margarets, Ware and Hertford East.

To pay the correct pay as you go fare, always touch in on a yellow card reader at the start of your journey and touch out at the end.

How much it costs

Use our single fare finder to check the price of a pay as you go journey between two stations. You can also find the price of National Rail season tickets between two stations.

Daily and weekly caps apply. Always use the same contactless card or device so that all your fares can be capped.

For information about contactless only caps for National Rail stations beyond Zone 9, where Oyster isn't accepted, check the National Rail website.
